Time and a third is the standard rate for rest day working. Bank holidays are typically double time. Not your rank? Use the personaliser at the top of the page for Sergeant to Chief Superintendent, Scotland, Northern Ireland or any NHS Agenda for Change band — including London weighting and a take-home estimate.

These are national rates. Police pay in England and Wales is set centrally, so the same pay points apply to every force — the Metropolitan Police, West Midlands, Greater Manchester, Northumbria, Humberside, Thames Valley, West Yorkshire and the rest — along with the Ministry of Defence Police and British Transport Police. Only London weighting and the London allowance vary by location. Scotland and Northern Ireland have separate scales, both covered in the personaliser. This is a great tool to track overtime across a variety of shifts. It’s got a really handy clock feature on your lock screen as well as some features like splitting a shift if you earn different rates throughout a shift.

Hourly rate calculated on 40 hrs/week (52.14 weeks). The 2026/27 figures are the published 2025/26 rate plus the confirmed 3.5%, rounded to the nearest whole £3 — the convention Home Office pay circulars use. Every one of the 44 published 2025/26 pay points is a multiple of £3, and applying this rule to the 2024/25 circular reproduces the official 2025/26 figures exactly. Note that some press coverage quotes £52,015 for Constable PP7 by rounding to the nearest pound instead; the circular convention gives £52,014. These remain calculated figures, cross-checked against an independently published pay-scales guide to the pound on every rank and pay point bar two Constable figures within £1, until the Home Office publishes the per-force 2026/27 circular.

Pay Scales FAQ

What is police time and a third overtime?
Time and a third (×1.33) is the standard overtime rate paid to police officers in England and Wales when they work on their rest days. It means you earn your base hourly rate plus one third on top. For example, a Constable at PP7 earning £24.94/hr would receive £33.25/hr at time and a third. For bank holiday and certain other working, the rate may rise to double time (×2).
What are the current police pay scales for 2026/27?
Police pay scales for 2026/27 (effective 1 September 2026, +3.5%) follow the confirmed Home Office award. Constables start at £32,256 (post-2013 PP1) rising to £52,014 at PP7. Sergeants range from £55,443 to £58,176. Inspectors range from £66,000 to £71,397. Full rates for all ranks are shown in the table above.
What is the police pay rise for 2026/27?
Police officers in England and Wales got a 3.5% pay rise from 1 September 2026, confirmed by the Home Office on 15 July 2026 and applying to every rank from Constable to Chief Superintendent. A Constable with six years' service, for example, rose from £50,256 to £52,014 a year. Officers below the top of their pay scale may also be due a separate pay progression increment (typically 2–6%) on top of this. Use the tool and tables on this page to find your own rank and pay point, including the estimated impact on your take-home pay, or read the full breakdown.
When did the 2026/27 police pay rise start, and how were the new rates worked out?
The award took effect from 1 September 2026 — the standard annual implementation date for police pay in England and Wales, replacing the 2025/26 rates that applied from 1 September 2025. The 2026/27 figures on this page are calculated by applying the confirmed 3.5% uplift to each 2025/26 pay point, rounded to the nearest whole £3 (the Home Office circular convention). We've cross-checked these against an independently published police pay-scales guide and they match to the pound on every rank and pay point except two Constable figures, which are within £1. The official per-force Home Office pay circular, when published, is the final word.
What are the NHS pay bands for 2026/27?
NHS Agenda for Change pay bands for 2026/27 (effective 1 April 2026) range from £25,272 for Bands 1 and 2 up to £129,783 for Band 9 at the top step. Qualified nurses typically start at Band 5 (£32,073 entry, rising to £39,043 at the top step). Each band has three pay points: entry, mid, and top, based on years spent in that specific band rather than total career length.
How do I work out my hourly rate from my annual salary?
For police (40 hours/week): divide by 2,085.6
For NHS (37.5 hours/week): divide by 1,955.25

Example: NHS Band 5 entry £32,073 ÷ 1,955.25 = £16.40/hr
Example: Police Constable PP7 £52,014 ÷ 2,085.6 = £24.94/hr

Use the interactive tool above to find your rate instantly, then enter it into the Overtime Calculator.
What NHS overtime rates apply under Agenda for Change?
Under NHS Agenda for Change, unsocial hours enhancements apply within your standard 37.5-hr week: Saturday and weekday nights attract +30% for bands 4–9 (higher for lower bands); Sundays and bank holidays attract +60% for bands 4–9 (up to +94% for band 1). Overtime beyond 37.5 hours per week is paid at time and a half (×1.5) for bands 1–7. These two systems do not combine — you receive whichever applies to those hours. Always verify with your payroll team.
What is the police unsocial hours allowance?
Police officers are entitled to a 10% unsocial hours allowance for each full hour worked between 8pm and 6am. An on-call allowance of £35 per day is also payable. Away from home overnight attracts £60 per night, and there is a hardship allowance of £40 per night where proper accommodation is not provided. Dog handlers receive £2,946 per year for the first dog.
Do police Legacy pay points still apply?
Yes. Officers appointed before 1 April 2013 remain on Legacy Pay Points (PP0 to PP7). For 2026/27, the legacy structure starts at £33,969 (PP0) compared to £32,256 (PP1) on the post-2013 structure. Both structures converge at PP7 (£52,014). If you joined before 2013 and are still on legacy pay, the interactive tool above shows your correct rates.
Do Scotland, Wales, and Northern Ireland use the same NHS pay scales?
The rates shown on this page reflect the 2026/27 NHS Agenda for Change pay scales confirmed for England. Scotland, Wales, and Northern Ireland negotiate separately and may have different applicable rates. For devolved nation rates, check NHS Employers or your relevant Health Board directly.
How do I use these rates with the Overtime Live app?
