Frequently asked questions

What is the take-home pay for a Police Constable at PP7?
A Constable at PP7 (£50,256 gross) in England and Wales with no location allowance takes home approximately £35,900 per year or £2,990 per month, after income tax (20% basic rate plus 40% on a small portion above the threshold), National Insurance at 8%, and PPS 2015 pension contributions of 13.88%. Use the calculator above with your exact pay point to get a precise figure.
Do Inspectors get overtime pay?
No. Inspectors and officers of higher ranks (Chief Inspector, Superintendent, Chief Superintendent) are salaried under Police Regulations 2003. They do not receive enhanced overtime pay. Additional hours are not compensated at a higher rate. The calculator above shows take-home pay for salaried officers based on salary only.
Is London weighting pensionable?
No. The Metropolitan Police and City of London location allowance (£9,738) and the South East England allowance are non-pensionable. They are paid on top of your basic salary, are subject to income tax and National Insurance, but they do not count towards your pension tier threshold or your pensionable pay for contribution purposes. Your pension contributions are calculated on basic salary only.
Can I have multiple student loans?
Yes. The calculator allows you to select multiple student loan plans simultaneously. Plan 2 + Postgrad is the most common combination for officers who attended university from 2012 onwards and also studied at postgraduate level. The repayments are calculated separately against the relevant thresholds and then stacked. For example, on a £40,000 salary you would repay 9% above £27,295 (Plan 2) plus 6% above £21,000 (Postgrad) — both deducted independently.
How do I use 13 pay periods?
Some forces pay officers on a four-weekly (13 pay periods per year) cycle rather than monthly (12 periods). Toggle the "13 four-weekly" option above and all figures will update to show per-period rather than per-month amounts. Annual figures remain the same.
What is night duty enhancement for police?
Officers required to work between 8pm and 6am receive an unsocial hours enhancement of 10% of their basic hourly rate for those hours. This is separate from overtime pay — it applies to contracted hours worked overnight, not to extra shifts. Enter your typical weekly night hours in the Overtime section above to include it in your take-home estimate.
Does this calculator cover Police Scotland or Northern Ireland?
No. This calculator covers England and Wales only. Police Scotland officers are paid under separate Scottish pay scales agreed with the Scottish Police Federation. Police Service of Northern Ireland (PSNI) officers have their own pay structure and pension arrangements. The figures and calculations here do not apply to those forces.
